Bucaramanga, Colombia (July 13, 2013) – Colombia’s Santiago Rivas carded a terrific 7-under 65 on the final round to come from behind and collect his first win as a professional at the 56th Abierto Ciudad de Bucaramanga.

The Colombian Argos Tour event was also part of the Developmental Series, which provides players competing on their national tours a path to PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.

A regular contender on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, where ranks No. 37 in the Order of Merit halfway through the 2014 season, Rivas finished the 72-hole event at 13-under 275 to win by three shots over his countryman Oscar Patiño.

Three other Colombian players - Osbaldo Villada, Jaime Clavijo and Mario Hurtado - finished in a tie for third at 7-under 281. All of these players inside the top 5 have secured berths into the Developmental Series Final to be played in January in Ecuador.

“I didn’t expect this at all. I had been playing well and I have devoted a lot of time to my game, to me, in order to be happy with what I do. Everything just came together, one step at a time and I’m very happy with the outcome,” said the charismatic 28-year old who went paragliding while hosting the TV show ‘Esto es PGA TOUR Latinoamérica’ at the beginning of the season.

Coincidentally Rivas won at the Club Campestre de Bucaramanga, the same venue where he made his debut as a professional back in 2009.

His victory clinching 65 featured birdies on 5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 17 and 18, with only one bogey on 14. “I made up my mind that I was going to play two nine-hole rounds and that I had to shoot 3-under on each of them. The birdies on 8 and 9 served me well because they allowed me to reach that goal and kept me in pace. On 13 I plunged it into the water but I made a spectacular five (for par),” said the 28-year old who has had three top 20 finishes this season on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.

The Developmental Series Final Event will be played at the Arrayanes Country Club in Quito, Ecuador – January 12-18, 2015. The top five (5) finishers from each event played throughout the year will qualify for that final event, where the top 15 finishers will earn 2015 PGA TOUR Latinoamérica status. Those claiming spots 1-5 will be fully exempt.
