Larrazabal wins Developmental Series's Venezuela Open
He won the title after three playoff holes, defeating Dennis Meneghini and Gustavo Morantes.
CARACAS, Venezuela (May 1, 2014) -- Diego Larrazabal achieved the biggest win of his career at the PGA TOUR Latinoameica's Developmental Series' XXXI Venezuela Open Copa DIRECTV.
The 34-year-old from Caracas won on the third playoff hole against his fellow countrymen Dennis Meneghini and amateur Gustavo Morantes.
Larrazabal shot a 3-under 207 at Lagunita Country Club to be the third Venezuelan to win the Open.
"It is the most important achievement of my career, not only because it is the Venezuela Open, but it also was played at the club where I was born, in front of my family and friends and it is part of the Developmental Series, which gives me the chance to go the Finals to get my card for next season on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica, " he said.
In the playoff, amateur Venezuelan Morantes was eliminated after the first hole. Larrazabal had to wait to the third hole to beat Meneghini.
The next Developmenal Series event will be in Bucaramanga, Colombia at the Country Club of that city, July 10-13.
The first five players qualify for the Final, which will be played in Ecuador in January 2015. Players who finish in the top 5 will receive fully-exempt status for the 2015 season. Players ranked Nos. 6-10 will earn status for the first half of the season and will be subject to a mid-season reshuffle. Players who finish Nos. 11-15 will earn conditional status and will gain entry after the first 10 players from the Qualifying Tournaments.
