Bahia Blanca, Argentina (April 12, 2014) – A five-shot lead entering the final day proved strong enough for Argentina’s Sebastián Saavedra to cruise to a comfortable win at the 33rd playing of the Abierto Nortapatagónico NEC presentado por OSDE this Saturday afternoon. The 72-hole tournament played at the Club de Golf Palihue in Bahia Blanca, Argentina was the third event on the 2014 Developmental Series schedule.

Saavedra felt right at home in Bahia Blanca, where the field endured tough conditions on a cold, windy and rainy final day in which the temperature dropped to 50 degrees. His final round of 70 helped him secure a four-shot victory at 7-under par 273. This was also his second career win on the Argentine Tour, where he won the 95th Campeonato Abierto del Sur last year in Mar del Plata.

“If there’s a Golf Club where I feel right at home that’s Palihue. Collecting a victory here, so close to home it’s really special for me,” commented the 28-year old who early in his career as a professional won twice on the Tour de las Americas.

The rain and gusty winds provided early winter conditions in Bahia Blanca, a town located 400 miles Southwest of downtown Buenos Aires. Under the tough playing conditions and holding a five-shot lead after a 65 on Friday, Saavedra’s plan was basically to avoid unnecessary risks.

A fully exempt member on NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, where he lost two events in three-way playoffs last year, Saavedra played smart golf on Saturday. He pared the first nine holes to find Paraguayan veteran Ramón Franco, within four shots, as his only thread.

His first of only two bogeys, on No. 10, shortened his lead to three. However, his good putting down the stretch for birdies on 12 and 14 kept him under control. Franco ended up carding a best of the day 68 to secure runner-up honors, while Argentina’s Clodomiro Carranza, 69, finished another stroke further back at the solo third.

The five leading players from the Abierto Nortapatagónico NEC presentado por OSDE, not otherwise exempt to play the NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica in 2015, will gain access to the Developmental Series Final Tournament to be played in Ecuador in January.
