MERIDA, Mexico ( April 7, 2014 ) -- The most recent OHL Round of the Week Award goes to Californian Matt Ryan for his third round at the Mundo Maya Open at Yucatán Country Club. Ryan carded a 6-under 66 Saturday -- the week's best round on a course that played very difficult because of the windy conditions.

Ryan, a Fresno State University graduate, was one part of a seven-man playoff that was eventually won by Marcelo Rozo two weeks ago at the TransAmerican Power Products CRV Open. He racked up seven birdies against one bogey in his Round of the Week performance this week.

Ryan started his round with birdies on Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 7 to finish the front-9 in 32. He also birdied the 10th hole, but he found his only stumble on the par-3 12th. However, this didn't faze him and he was able to complete his round with birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 to climb to fourth place on Saturday with a chance to turn in another great finish.

“It was a great round of golf,” said Ryan, who thought the wind was easier for a lefty at the Jack Nicklaus designed El Jaguar Golf Course. “It could have been very, very low. I pared four par-5s, but I played really solid on the par-3s, so it was kind of an even trade. On par-3s a lot of guys were making 4s and I was making 2s. I birdied three par-3s on that third round.”

But Sunday was different and his 78 sent him back several positions into a tie for 16th place.

This round was the highest among the best rounds of the year, but still Ryan took the $1,000 check that OHL gives every week.

“It’s fantastic (to be the winner of this week’s award). I had no idea. It’s awesome because Sunday was tough. I mean, I entered the day in a tie for fourth, feeling pretty good all-day, to kind of finishing poorly and going backwards,” said Ryan, who ranks No. 12 on the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Order of Merit.
